IUIU PARTICIPATES IN THE IQRA’ 2025 GLOBAL CONFERENCE

The Islamic University in Uganda team of medical scholars participated in an online international conference on Saturday, 23rd August 2025

The conference was organized by IQRA Foundation under the theme, “Honoring our Legacy, Shaping our Future: Towards a new Muslim contribution to Civilization.” From 22nd – 24th August 2025

 

The IUIU session was moderated by Dr. Gyagenda AbdulSwamad, the Deputy Director for Research, Publication, and Innovation. The IUIU team of scholars made presentations under the subtheme," Smart Health: Shaping tomorrow's care through research, systems, and prevention.”

 

Dr. Kharim Mwebaza Muluya (PhD), Lecturer – Islamic University in Uganda, Department of Public Health, presented a topic, “Overlooked Magic for Healthcare & Wellbeing in Uganda: Use of Locally Available Resources for Smart Health in a Constrained Muslim Population.” In this topic, he emphasized strengthening community referral linkages in enhancing timely access to maternal care, contributing to reduced delays and better survival for mothers and newborns. He also argued for the effective use of routine health data to ensure evidence-based planning, prioritization of resources, and more responsive health service delivery.

 

Dr. Aremu Abdulmujeeb Babatunde, a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean, Faculty of Health Science, Islamic University in Uganda, presented on a topic, “Smart Health: Shaping Tomorrow's Care Through Research, Systems, and Prevention.” In this topic, he emphasized a holistic transformation of smart healthcare. He advocates for research in this area, building intelligent systems, and prioritizing prevention.

Dr. Nazir Rashid, the IUIU medical officer, presented on the integration of Islamic values in the medical curriculum. He argues that the ideas of the classical Muslim polymaths, such as Ibn Sina, should be incorporated in the curriculum of Medicine, not only in IUIU but in all Muslim founded medical schools globally.

 

Dr. Safi Kaskas, the founder of the IQRA Foundation and organizer of the conference, pledged to collaborate with IUIU in research and in strategies for improving human welfare. “Our team will contact IUIU to sign an MOU and identify areas of collaboration,” Dr. Safi said. He also commended the team from IUIU for the provocative and insightful ideas raised in their presentations and for participating in the conference generally.

 

Dr. Gyagenda highlighted IUIU’s dedication to research and its willingness to collaborate with any institution whose values align with the core principles of Islam and the values of the Islamic University in Uganda.
